The automated high-speed analysis and separation of cells on the basis of spectroscopic parameters has been applied to studies of cellular differentiation in two systems. The temporal changes following induction of differentiation by dimethylsulfoxide in the Friend virus-transformed erythroid cells were quantitated by multiparameter analysis leading to the separation of discrete subpopulations.
